PWD Septic System Permits

Installation or replacement of a septic system on a property located within 200 feet of the normal high water mark of Sebago Lake requires a septic system permit from the Portland Water District, in addition to one from the town. The Portland Water District's jurisdiction also extends up some of the tributaries to the lake (including, for example, the area around Sebago Cove in Naples and along the Songo River to the Locks and Songo Bayou).

All systems must meet the standards outlined in the Maine State Plumbing Code [CMR 144A Part 241].

What documents do I need to apply for PWD Septic System Permit?

  • A design for a septic system which is completed by a Licensed Site Evaluator (also known as a HHE-200 form)
  • A floor plan of your structure –this can be hand drawn if a formal plan is not available. Please be sure to label all the rooms.
  • An Erosion control plan – this can also be hand drawn. This plan shows how the contractor plans to control the movement of bare soil during construction.
  • A PWD Septic System Application – this form is available as a fillable PDF or it can be printed and filled out by hand.
