Utilities United Against Scams Recognizes Sixth Annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on November 17

11.17.2021

The Portland Water District joins Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS) to support International Fraud Awareness Week (November 14-20) and recognize the sixth annual Utility Scam Awareness Day, November 17. Utility Scam Awareness Day is an advocacy and awareness campaign focused on educating customers and exposing the tactics used by scammers.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, utilities have seen an increase in reported scammers who are contacting customers seeking payments and personal and financial information to avoid service interruptions. As a reminder, the Portland Water District never asks for payments using a pre-paid debit card, gift card, cryptocurrencies, or third-party digital payment mobile applications, and we will provide multiple notices and work to assist customers with payment plan options before service interruptions. Also Portland Water District employees carry photo IDs and generally drive white vehicles with the District's name and logo clearly visible. If you have questions about whether the Portland Water District dispatched someone to your home, please call 761-8310.
