Local Business Wins Award for Wastewater Pretreatment Excellence

11.22.2021

SIGCO, a glass fabrication company in Westbrook, was recently presented the Pretreatment Excellence Award at the Maine Water Environment Association’s Fall Convention. SIGCO, who was nominated for the Award by the Portland Water District, cuts, grinds, and polishes sheets of raw glass to customer specifications. This processing produces glass fines, which built up and caused issues in a pump station.

SIGCO worked with the City of Westbrook and the Portland Water District to install a filtration pretreatment system to remove these glass fines prior to discharge to the sewer.

Since the installation of the new filtration equipment, the city has not reported any issues with the pump station. SIGCO has been permitted as a Best Management Practices industrial user in PWD’s pretreatment program since 2018.
