Portland Water District Reminds Public About Risks of Unauthorized Hydrant Use

The Portland Water District is reminding the public that unauthorized use of fire hydrants is illegal and can cause serious damage to public infrastructure, affect fire protection, and compromise drinking water quality.

Fire hydrants are part of a carefully managed, pressurized system. When operated improperly, they can create sudden pressure surges, known as “water hammers,” that can rupture pipes and lead to costly repairs and service disruptions.

Unauthorized hydrant use can:

  • Reduce water pressure needed for firefighting
  • Damage hydrants and underground infrastructure
  • Cause sudden water main breaks and flooding
  • Increase the risk of contamination to the drinking water supply

Preventing this type of damage is important to maintaining reliable service and avoiding unnecessary costs.

Important reminder: Contractors or businesses that need water must apply for a hydrant meter and permit through the Portland Water District. Hydrants are operated by PWD personnel to ensure safety and system reliability.

If you see suspicious hydrant activity, report it immediately by calling 207-761-8310.
