Locals Participate in Great Maine Outdoor Weekend

10.02.2014

On the morning of Saturday, September 27th, local residents joined the Portland Water District to launch a fleet of 26 kayaks where the Sticky River meets Sebago Lake in Standish. The excursion was one of 125+ events occurring throughout the state to encourage the public to celebrate Great Maine Outdoor Weekend. One reason to celebrate the great outdoors is certainly a valuable resource like Sebago Lake – the drinking water for 1/5 of Maine’s population.

PWD hopes to inspire stewardship and protection of this resource by providing opportunities for the public to learn about Sebago Lake – its water quality, history and ecology. As kayakers paddled leisurely through the open water marsh, through the abandoned trestle and into Sebago Lake, they were treated to various sights and sounds. A Common Loon family, Bald Eagles, painted turtles, fragrant water lilies, and whirligig beetles were just a few sights on the kayaking excursion.
