Facility Technician I

 6 Month probationary rate $25.98 - Regular rate $27.34  

Purpose/Customer Impact: To store, receive, maintain and issue Portland Water District’s (PWD) equipment and materials in support of the Operations Department and provide skills and labor in repairing and maintaining PWD’s Facilities.

Reporting Relationships:  Reports to: Facility Maintenance Foreperson, Administrative Facilities Chief Operator

Direct Reports: Temporary employees as assigned

Interrelationships: Daily contact with suppliers, Internal and external customers, and contractors  Independent Action: Limited direct supervision.

Job Duties:

  • Perform work in the following trades:
  • Carpentry: rough and some finish carpentry repair, maintenance and construction of concrete forms, boxes, shelves, doors, floors, partitions, roof moldings, etc.
  • Pipefitting and plumbing: install, maintain and repair various pipe types (cast iron, brass, copper, synthetic, etc.) and other plumbing fixtures and accessories.
  • Masonry: perform masonry work to include the laying of blocks, bricks, troweling concrete, and other minor masonry projects.
  • Painting prep and paint interior and exterior of buildings, including floor trim, ceilings, walls, etc. seal-coat both block and brick facilities. Prep and paint equipment.
  • Electrical: Assist qualified electrician in bending pipe, pulling wire, and the installation of electrical equipment and fixtures. Replacement of switch covers, receptacles, etc.
  • Boiler/HVAC: Perform operational and preventive maintenance tasks on PWD systems.
  • Perform Land Reserve maintenance as necessary, which may include operation of lake boat or work barge used in the setting and maintenance of the buoy system, debris removal, fence repair and maintenance, tree removal, and other related tasks.
  • Perform grounds maintenance at all facility locations.
  • Operate front-end loader and one ton dump truck. Tow and operate aerial work platforms.
  • Accurately document PMs, repairs, work performed, and other related work order information.
  • Perform other related duties, as required

Stockroom Operations:

  • Check stock deliveries, issue and inventory stock, reconcile work orders and stock slips.
  • Process and forward orders and invoices to Financial Services.
  • Maintain logs and various stock records.
  • Clean, maintain and organize stockroom and stockyard.
  • Perform manual labor in loading and unloading freight.
  • Competently utilize PWD’s automated inventory control systems (such as our computer and bar-coding system) to review and keep current inventory files, issue entries, returns and receipts and print stock reports.
  • Assume operational responsibility for the stockroom during the Inventory Control Lead Person's absence, i.e., sickness, vacation, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Physical Requirements:  Sitting, standing, walking, twisting, reaching, bending, climbing, grasping, kneeling, squatting, visual accuracy, clear verbal and written communication, lifting (maximum 75 lbs.)

  •  Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Driver’s license, with a clean driving record.
  • Obtain a State of Maine Class B (CDL) Driver’s license within two (2) years of assignment to Facilities Services: To provide operation with support during storm events and emergencies.
  • Obtain Building Operation Certificate (BOC) Level 1 Certificate within 2 years of assignment to Facilities Services.
  • Possess a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in performing work in an industrial or commercial environment, with proficiency in three (3) of the following six (6) trades, carpentry, pipe fitting and plumbing, masonry, painting, electrical, and boiler/ HVAC operation.
  • Ability to work with building construction plans, specifications, general industry safety standards, and other applicable standards or codes.
  • Ability to identify construction and safety problems, communicate and document needed changes.
  • Ability to understand, follow and relay oral and written instructions or descriptions encountered on the job.
  • Ability to work within all Microsoft office products with basic skills to initiate new documents. Basic familiarity with PWD’s asset management system.
  • Ability to meet approved physical and medical standards.
  • Ability to operate a forklift safely and efficiently.
  • Must be physically able to complete necessary tasks while wearing an approved respirator, as required.
