They’re Back: Shrimp Parts Continue To Pose Problems At Wastewater Facilities

Although the City and Portland Water District teamed up last year to reach out to Portland's shrimp processors, shrimp parts continue to plague wastewater facilities this season.

Last year, shrimp parts created havoc at the East End Wastewater Treatment Facility and pump stations - clogging equipment and halting processes. Workers estimate they removed hundreds of pounds of shrimp parts from equipment last year.

"We're starting to see shrimp parts entering the wastewater system," explained Portland Water District's Wastewater Services Manager Scott Firmin, "We are hoping to mitigate the problem before it becomes excessive!"

During the City's inspections last year, no violations were discovered and the origination of the problem was left a mystery. This week, the City is preparing to once again remind the shrimping industry about proper disposal of their waste. The discharge of seafood shells is prohibited in The Rules and Regulations for the use of the Wastewater System under 2.2, Specific Prohibitions, Section (c). City staff has already begun door to door inspections in hopes of alleviating the problem. In addition, staff involved with the Industrial Pretreatment Program from the City of Portland’s Department of Public Services is mailing out letters to industries involved with shrimp processing, as additional reminders that highlight this requirement.

The Portland Water District reminds residents and businesses to only flush human waste and toilet paper. Anything else in the wastewater system overwhelms processes and can result in overflows and back ups.
