PWD Temporarily Suspends Fluoride Addition Due To Supply Shortage
Due to a shortage of supply, the Portland Water District temporarily suspended the addition of hydrofluorosilicic acid (fluoride) to the water on Monday, July 30. Fluoride levels have now dropped from the typical 1.20 PPM to the normal background level of 0.05 PPM. Customers should not notice any aesthetic changes in taste or color. Fluoride is added to the water for dental health and its absence does not pose any health risks.

The Portland Water District expects a shipment from its supplier, Monson Chemicals, on Friday, August 3. But for those who wish to continue receiving the benefits of fluoride, without interruption, you should contact your dentist or healthcare provider.

With the withdrawal of a major supplier, US Agrichemicals, there has been a national fluoride shortage since 2005. The Portland Water District has been somewhat insulated from the disruption, through a contract with Monson Chemicals.
