Water Main Renewal Projects

The 2004 water main renewal season has begun. The following projects are scheduled to be complete during the 2004 construction period, April 15, 2004 - November 15, 2004. This schedule is subject to change. Due to variables within the system, specific projects could be postponed and others may be added.

Water main renewals are based on the criteria below:

1. Water Quality
2. Leak Frequency
3. Age and Type of Main
4. Municipal and M.D.O.T. Road Reconstruction
5. Critical Loop Feeds (Eliminating Dead Ends Based on Flow Characteristics)

The Portland Water District has been serving Greater Portland communities with Sebago Lake water for nearly 100 years and upgrading and maintaining the system since 1908. For the past several years, the Portland Water District has invested roughly $2 million dollars a year in water main renewals. Since 1985, reported leaks have been reduced by roughly 30 percent due to the effectiveness of this program, even with the continued aging of existing water mains.
