Water Main Renewal Projects

The 2010 water main renewal season is now upon us. Water main renewals involve replacing existing water mains with new ones to improve water flow characteristics and to improve service to our customers.  The following projects are scheduled to be completed during the 2010 construction period, April 15, 2010 - November 15, 2010. This schedule is subject to change. Due to variables within the system, specific projects could be postponed and others may be added.

Water mains on the renewal list usually meet 4 out of the 5 criteria listed below.

     1.  Water Quality
     2.  Leak Frequency
     3.  Age and Type of Main
     4.  Municipal and M.D.O.T. Road Reconstruction
     5.  Critical Loop Feeds (Eliminating Dead Ends Based on Flow Characteristics)

The Portland Water District has been serving Greater Portland communities with Sebago Lake water for more than 100 years and upgrading and maintaining the system since 1908. For the past several years, the Portland Water District has invested roughly $2 million dollars a year in water main renewals. Since 1985, reported leaks have been reduced by roughly 30 percent due to the effectiveness of this program, even with the continued aging of existing water mains.

If you would like more information on the water main renewal projects please contact Asset Management and Planning Group at (207) 774-5961 extension 3043.
