The Wards Hill Transmission Main project is an important component of a major pressure zone consolidation project the District is undertaking. The (Elevation) 407 Zone consolidation effort is designed to address several deficiencies in the existing system including low service pressures, long residence/ travel time resulting in areas of lower water quality, transmission security and redundancy, and replacement of aging storage and pumping facilities in the Municipalities of Gorham, Windham and Westbrook.

Construction of 5,000’ of 30” & 24” transmission mains was completed in March of 2009. This piping will supply water to the proposed 2 MGD Ward’s Hill Pump Station This transmission main extends from near the intersection of Wards Hill Road and Sebago Lake Road along Wards Hill Road and Harding Bridge Road to near the intersection with Huston Road. One end of the main connects into an existing 30” cast iron main which comes from the Sebago Lake Treatment Facility (SLWTF), while the other end connects to the Districts’ primary transmission mains (a 48” concrete and a 42” cast iron). 1,700’ of 16” pump station discharge transmission main is proposed to connect to 3,500’ of previously installed 16” transmission main in Huston Rd. An additional 2,400’ of 16” transmission main is proposed connect to the existing 407 South pressure zone (total of 4,100’ of 16” transmission main).

An outcome of the overall 407 Zone consolidation project is to reduce the residence time and thereby improve the water quality of water delivered to our customers. This will serve to improve our ability to comply with current Total Coliform Rule requirements as well as potential future Distribution Rule requirements.

Another goal of the 407 Zone consolidation project is raise service pressures in an area that currently has sub-standard available pressure. This deficiency is exacerbated by transmission main head losses that occur under high demand conditions. By putting this area on the 407 Pressure Zone the base pressure will be increased by approximately 60 psi, reducing the risk of potential cross contamination events occurring.

The existing 30” cast iron main currently connects into a 12” main which is part of the local Gorham distribution system. Construction of the Wards Hill transmission main makes the more than 18,000 feet of existing 30” main part of the transmission system to Portland. This significantly improves capacity and redundancy with a relatively small capital investment.
